September 3, 2022 - Cape May with Bones

This morning I was flying down to Salisbury, Maryland to pick up my old college shipmate "Bones" and then we were going to the Flight Deck Diner at Cape May Airport for breakfast.

It was a gorgeous flying weather:  great vis, smooth air, perfect temperature, light winds.

I just cruised along at 2,000 feet and enjoyed the ride.  Here I'm looking south at Eastern Neck in the foreground and Kent Narrows in the background.

Highway 50 is running left to right and intersects with Highway 404 which runs to the east, straight as an arrow.   This is how we drive to Ocean City:  50 and then 404.

Looking south at the mighty Choptank River.

About to pass over the Nanticoke River.   To the right, Marshyhope Creek feeds into the Nanticoke.

Looking down at my destination:  Bennett Airport (1N5), a privately-owned, public airfield.  It has two bisecting grass runways.

I made a great wheel landing on the very smooth grass runway.

Bones pulled up just as I was getting out of the cockpit.  This is Bones.  He has flown with me before but it has been a few years.

The airport was in excellent condition.  Someone really does a great job of keeping up the place.

Parked on the Cape May ramp next to a Mooney.

There was something going on today, because the NAS Wildwood museum parking lot was absolutely filled.  It turns out today was "AirFest" day at Cape May Airport and a lot of people turned out for it on this beautiful Saturday.

After a tasty breakfast at the always good Flight Deck Diner, Bones and I jumped in the RV and taxiied for takeoff.  The people attending AirFest watched us taxi by.  Yes, that is a PBY Catalina and B-25 to the right of the crowd.  There was also an AD-1 Skyraider and twin Beech.

A close-up of the PBY which started up and followed us on the taxiway.

After departing Cape May, we headed north up the Jersey Shore.

Rounding the bend at Great Egg Harbor Inlet.

Passing a tow plane with banner.  There were quite a few of them out today.  Easy to see.  Although sometimes I would see the banner before I would see the tow plane.

Approaching Atlantic City.

The historic Boardwalk Hall is at center.   The performance center was built in 1926.

We cruised back to Cape May, hopped the Delaware Bay over to Cape Henlopen, then south down the beach.  Here we are passing by Silver Lake.  "Bones" told me a certain celebrity has a house on the Lake.  Can you guess who?

Now that's a party!

Passing by South Point with a bunch of mansions on it.

Back at Bennett Airport, Bones let me drive his Tesla around.  After the drive, we enjoyed the warmth of a crackling fire inside the electric car.
